Editorial Standards
How we research, verify, and maintain accuracy across everything we publish.
At Mortgage Freedom Calculator, every article, calculator, and data point exists to help you make informed decisions about the biggest purchase of your life. We take that responsibility seriously. This page explains how our content is created, what sources we rely on, and the standards we hold ourselves to.
Our Principles
Data-Backed
Every claim is supported by verifiable data from government and institutional sources.
Current
Mortgage rates, home prices, and market data are updated regularly from live sources.
Unbiased
We are not a lender or broker. Our content is educational, not a sales pitch.
For Real People
Written for everyday Americans, not finance professionals. Clear language, no jargon.
Who Writes Our Content
Our Data Sources
We do not guess. Every statistic, rate, and figure referenced in our content comes from one of the following authoritative sources:
Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED)
Our mortgage rate data comes directly from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The 30-year fixed rate (MORTGAGE30US) and 15-year fixed rate (MORTGAGE15US) are pulled from FRED and updated weekly. Our calculators display these rates in real time.
S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Home Price Index
Home price appreciation data used in our Rent vs Buy calculator and blog content is sourced from the Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index, the industry standard for tracking residential real estate values.
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
We reference CFPB guidance on mortgage prepayment rules, how mortgage interest is calculated, and consumer protection information. The CFPB is the federal agency responsible for consumer financial protection.
Freddie Mac & Fannie Mae
Government-sponsored enterprise data on mortgage origination trends, borrower profiles, and housing market conditions informs our affordability analysis and market commentary.
National Association of Realtors (NAR)
Homebuyer demographics, including median age of first-time buyers, median home prices, and market activity data referenced in our blog posts.
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)
Consumer Price Index (CPI) data for inflation comparisons, wage growth statistics, and cost-of-living figures used in our affordability content.
Our Fact-Checking Process
Before any article is published on Mortgage Freedom Calculator:
- Data verification: Every statistic is traced back to its original source. We link to primary sources whenever possible so readers can verify the data themselves.
- Calculator accuracy: Our calculators use standard mortgage amortization formulas (PMT function) and are tested against known scenarios to ensure accuracy. Rate data is pulled directly from the Federal Reserve API.
- Examples are realistic: When we use example scenarios (a $400,000 home at 6.2%, for instance), the numbers reflect real market conditions at the time of writing, not hypothetical best cases.
- No misleading claims: We do not promise savings, guarantee outcomes, or present opinions as facts. When we share a perspective, we make clear that it is based on analysis, not certainty.
- Regular updates: Articles that reference current rates or market conditions are reviewed and updated as conditions change. Each article displays its publication date so readers know when it was written.
What We Are Not
Transparency matters. Here is what Mortgage Freedom Calculator is not:
- We are not a lender. We do not originate, broker, or service mortgage loans.
- We are not financial advisors. Our content is educational. It is not personalized financial advice. Your situation is unique, and major financial decisions should involve a qualified professional.
- We do not accept payment for editorial content. No lender, broker, or company can pay to influence what we write or how our calculators work.
